Latex and wool are both serious pillow materials, and neither one is obviously better. Latex wins on responsiveness, consistent support, and upkeep. Wool wins on active moisture management, weight, and the absence of rubber smell or latex-allergy risk. The right call depends on what you actually need from a pillow.
I'll be straightforward: we make wool pillows and we don't sell latex. If latex is the better fit for how you sleep, I'll say so plainly. Overselling wool would only cost us your trust.
Latex beats wool on bounce and support. If you want a pillow that springs back instantly and holds a firm shape all night, latex has a real edge wool can't match.
Wool manages moisture actively; latex relies on airflow. For hot or sweaty sleepers, that's a meaningful difference. Wool pulls moisture vapor into the fiber. Latex moves air around it.
Temperature is about feel, not proof. Latex breathes through its open structure; wool works by managing moisture. No study has measured one sleeping cooler than the other, so treat cooling as a preference, not a settled fact.
Latex allergy is real, affects about 1% of the general population, and is a clear reason to avoid latex bedding.3
Both go the distance. The difference is attention, not lifespan. Solid latex holds its shape with zero maintenance. Wool compresses with use and wants periodic fluffing or sunning, and with that care it keeps going for a decade or more.

What latex is
Not all latex pillows are the same material, and the distinctions matter.
Natural vs synthetic vs blended. Natural latex comes from rubber-tree sap. Synthetic latex is petroleum-derived (styrene-butadiene). Blended latex mixes the two and is generally cheaper, less durable, and more prone to off-gassing odor.1 If you're drawn to latex as a natural material, the scope of that claim stops at 100% natural latex. Synthetic and blended versions don't carry it.
Dunlop vs Talalay. Dunlop is denser, firmer, and more durable. Talalay is softer, fluffier, and typically more expensive.2 You'll see claims that one breathes cooler than the other, but that difference isn't well substantiated, so don't buy on it.
How sap becomes foam. Latex doesn't come out of the tree as a pillow. To make foam, the liquid latex gets whipped up with foaming agents, set with a gelling step (Dunlop uses a gelling agent such as sodium silicofluoride; Talalay flash-freezes the foam and gels it with carbon dioxide), and then vulcanized, meaning it's cured with heat, sulfur, zinc oxide, and chemical accelerators so the rubber cross-links and holds a shape.9 Every latex pillow is made this way, including the all-natural ones. There is no version of latex foam without the curing chemistry.
What the "100% natural" label covers. It describes the latex the foam started from, meaning rubber-tree sap rather than petroleum-derived synthetic. It doesn't mean the finished foam is nothing but sap: a few percent of it is the curing package that vulcanization requires. And not all latex sold as "natural" is fully natural to begin with, since blends of natural and synthetic rubber are common. There's a certification for it, GOLS, which verifies at least 95 percent natural-latex content.10 It's a real signal, but as we get into in our organic pillow buying guide, a label is only as good as its auditing, and overseas certification fraud is a documented problem. We'd rather you could trace the material directly.
To keep this fair: the vulcanizing accelerators (thiurams, carbamates) are documented skin sensitizers, but nearly all of that literature comes from gloves and other direct-skin rubber products, not from pillows sitting inside a cover and a pillowcase.11 Finished foam is also washed during manufacturing. None of that makes a latex pillow dangerous. It does mean "natural" describes the ingredient, not the process.
Solid core vs shredded. A solid latex pillow holds a consistent shape and requires no adjustment. A shredded latex pillow is moldable, and because there's more air moving through loose fill, it tends to sleep cooler than a dense solid block.1 That's the one temperature distinction with real support behind it.
Latex's open-cell structure lets air move in a way solid memory foam doesn't, and product testers generally find it sleeps cooler than memory foam.1 That's a tester's impression, not a measured result, and it says nothing about how latex compares to wool.
Where latex wins
I want to be specific here, because latex earns these categories.
Responsiveness and bounce. Latex springs back immediately when you shift positions. Lab testing bears this out: latex foam is far more resilient than memory foam, recovering its shape almost instantly where memory foam is slow to rebound.5 Wool has no comparable property. It's moldable and soft, but it doesn't lift. For sleepers who want a pillow that actively pushes back and repositions quickly, wool simply doesn't offer that.
Consistent support and pressure relief. A solid latex pillow holds its shape through the night. Back and side sleepers who need stable neck alignment often do well with it, because the loft doesn't shift around, though how well any pillow supports alignment depends as much on its shape and height as on the fill.6 Wool fills can redistribute under pressure, which some people love and others find frustrating.
Durability. Latex is one of the longer-lasting pillow fills, holding its structure better than memory foam, polyester, or down.1 You'll see specific lifespans quoted, anywhere from 2-4 up to 5-10 years, but those are editorial estimates rather than tested figures, so hold them loosely. Wool goes the distance too. In our experience a wool pillow with basic care lasts well past ten years, and the families who taught us to make pillows are still sleeping on wool bedding after twenty. We build our wool pillows overstuffed because wool compresses with use. The difference here is attention, not lifespan: latex holds its shape with none, wool wants an occasional sunning along the way.
Low maintenance. Solid latex is about as close to set-and-forget as a pillow gets. No fluffing required, no periodic sunning. If that's what you want from a sleep product, latex has a genuine advantage.
Where wool wins
Wool's strongest case is what the fiber does that foam can't.
Active moisture management. Wool is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture vapor directly into the fiber while the surface still feels dry. That's different from how latex handles heat and sweat. Latex foam manages temperature through airflow, which works well in a breathable construction but doesn't touch moisture the same way wool does. Weight. Solid latex is notably heavy. Wool batting is light. If you're someone who adjusts your pillow frequently during the night, that weight difference is noticeable.
No rubber smell. Natural latex has a rubbery odor that fades over days to weeks. Synthetic and blended latex tends to off-gas more. Wool has no comparable off-gassing because it isn't a foam product. If you're sensitive to new-product smells, wool starts neutral.
No latex-allergy risk. Latex allergy is an IgE-mediated immune response to proteins in natural rubber. It's present in roughly 1% of the general population, with higher rates among healthcare workers, people who've had multiple surgeries, and those with spina bifida or certain food allergies (banana, kiwi, avocado, chestnut).34 Reactions range from skin irritation to, rarely, anaphylaxis. If you or anyone in your household has a latex allergy, wool or another non-latex fill is the straightforward answer. Natural fiber, full stop. Wool is a natural fiber. Natural latex is also a natural material, and I don't want to misrepresent that. But synthetic and blended latex are petroleum-derived, and even 100% natural latex has to pass through the vulcanization chemistry above to become a pillow. Wool doesn't. The fiber gets washed and carded, and that's the whole process. If an all-natural fill matters to you, both distinctions are worth knowing before you buy. Who each is for
Latex makes sense if: you want firm, bouncy, consistent support and don't want to think about your pillow maintenance. You sleep on your back or side and want stable neck alignment. You don't have a latex allergy. You'd rather replace a pillow every several years than tend to it in the meantime.
Wool makes sense if: you run hot or deal with night sweats and want a fill that actively moves moisture, not just airflow. You want something lighter and softer that you can shape. You're avoiding synthetic materials or rubber proteins. You're willing to fluff or sun the pillow occasionally in exchange for those properties.
Latex allergy: wool is the clear call. There's no workaround on that one.

Care and maintenance
Neither latex nor wool is machine washable, though for different reasons.
Latex: never machine wash. The agitation and heat break down the foam structure. Spot clean the pillow and wash the cover if it's removable. Some latex pillows don't have a removable cover, so check before you buy.
Wool (ours specifically): our pillows are sewn shut as a single unit, so there's no cover to unzip and wash separately. For routine care, a pillowcase washed weekly is your first line of defense. Are latex pillows good?
Yes, latex pillows are genuinely good for the right sleeper. They offer above-average support, spring back quickly, and last a long time with minimal maintenance. Where they fall short is for sweaty sleepers (airflow helps, but doesn't manage moisture the way wool does), for people with latex allergies, and for anyone who wants a lighter, moldable fill. They're a solid choice if firm and bouncy support is what you're after.
Is a latex pillow good for neck pain?
The research here is real but mixed. A meta-analysis of nine studies found rubber (latex) pillows can reduce neck pain, though it credited good alignment more to a pillow's shape and height than to the fill material.6 Individual trials split: one found a latex pillow eased neck pain and disability, another found it didn't outperform the alternatives.78 So latex can help, especially in the right loft for your sleep position, but it's not a guaranteed fix. Do latex pillows smell?
Natural latex has a rubbery odor when new. The smell fades over days to a few weeks with good airflow. Synthetic and blended latex tends to off-gas more noticeably and for longer than 100% natural latex. If you're sensitive to new-product smells, buying natural rather than synthetic/blended latex makes a difference, or choosing wool avoids the issue entirely.

Which is cooler: wool or latex?
Honestly, no study has measured wool against latex, so anyone who names a clear winner is guessing. What's real is the mechanism. Latex breathes through its open structure, so it doesn't trap heat the way solid foam does. Wool absorbs moisture vapor into the fiber and releases it, which targets the damp, clammy side of overheating.
If your problem is a stuffy, non-breathable surface, latex's airflow helps. If you wake up sweaty, wool's moisture handling is aimed at that. Neither is proven to sleep cooler than the other.
