Wool Manufacturing Process

Our manufacturing process is simple because that’s the way it should be. We are dedicated to having a short supply chain and supporting small and local American business. While much of the world has decided to go the way of outsourcing both labor and material, we at The Woolshire have decided to bring back the cottage economy by manufacturing ourselves out of our home to create the highest quality natural wool pillow on the market.

Working with our hands with quality organic material is something we love doing. It’s easy to get caught up in the digital world of the modern day and so we took a few steps back. We learned the art of pillow making from old time wool pillow makers and have really fallen in love. While the twenty-first century has been all about rapid production, we have turned down the dial. Every single pillow we make is made with careful attention to detail, one at a time.

From Farm To Pillow: The Process

  1. First, our organic cotton is grown by small Texas farms using quality long-staple cotton. It is grown without the use of chemical pesticides and is free from formaldehyde and other endocrine disrupting chemicals. Less than 1% of the global supply of cotton is grown organically, and we are proud to support those farmers.
  2. The Texas cotton is woven into fabric and shipped to The Woolshire where we cut, sew, fill with wool, and then sew shut to complete our wool pillows. At this point we have the shell of the pillow.
  3. Our wool is grown in Montana only a few hours away from us. The sheep live in western Montana where they enjoy happy lives grazing the green pastures. The sheep’s wool keeps them warm in the winter months and then is shorn in the spring by a skilled shearer.
  4. Once the wool is sheared it is sorted, cleaned with organic soap, and then carded into wool batts using an old carding mill from the early 1900s. We pick up the carded wool batts in person in our trusty Wool Mobile (a large cargo van towing a trailer) and drive it back to The Woolshire where we cut, shape, and fill our sewn pillow cases to the desired loft of the customer.

We converted our basement into a wool pillow factory so that we could work from home as a family and focus on crafting a quality product. We do everything from cutting, sewing, crafting, packaging in plastic-free material, and shipping our wool pillows to each and every customer who places an order with us. Our manufacturing process isn’t about producing as quickly as possible, but is about a return to a localized economy, a dedication to quality, and true craftsmanship for everything we make.

BENEFITS OF WOOL

Natural

Wool is a natural product that is shorn annually. It is naturally anti-microbial, wicks moisture, and regulates temperature - keeping you warm in winter and cool in summer.

Biodegradable

Wool is organic and completely biodegradable, making it an excellent material for sustainability.

Clean Wool

Cleansing

Wool purifies the air by removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as formaldehyde in the atmosphere.
