What each fill does

Buckwheat hulls are the outer husks of buckwheat seeds. Packed into a pillow, they behave like a very firm, slow-moving beanbag. They hold a shape under your head and neck, shift to accommodate position changes, and let air circulate through the gaps between hulls. The firm base is the whole point.

Wool batting is carded fiber, not a loose granular fill. It compresses and springs back rather than shifting. The loft is softer and more forgiving, and wool fiber moves moisture vapor away from your skin before it has a chance to build up as heat. The two fills work on completely different principles.

We card our wool on our own mill in northern Idaho, on equipment from the 1960s that we keep running ourselves. The wool comes from Idaho ranchers and others across the western US. Where buckwheat wins

Firmness and support. Buckwheat is among the firmest pillow fills available. If you need a pillow that holds a consistent, structured loft all night, hulls do that in a way wool doesn't. Wool compresses and recovers; buckwheat holds.

Adjustability. This is buckwheat's single biggest advantage over almost any fill, including wool. You unzip the shell, scoop out hulls to lower loft and firmness, or add hulls to build it up. You can dial it by the handful until it fits your shoulder width and sleep position. No other natural fill comes close to that level of customization.

Airflow. Air moves through the gaps between hulls. For sleepers who run genuinely hot, that direct airflow is a real advantage over foam and many other fills.1 Wool regulates temperature differently, through moisture rather than air movement, so if raw airflow is what you're after, buckwheat is the one that delivers it.

Neck-gap support. Many side and back sleepers pack hulls toward the bottom of the pillow to fill the neck gap. Because buckwheat holds its shape under load, it stays where you put it through the night. Many people find this genuinely comfortable, and the reports are consistent. There isn't solid clinical research proving buckwheat treats neck pain, though, so we won't claim more than that.

Where wool wins

Quiet. Buckwheat rustles and crunches when you move. That's a well-established tradeoff, and for light sleepers it's a real problem. Wool batting makes no sound at all.

Weight. A standard buckwheat pillow commonly runs around 9 pounds, and body pillow versions push past 20 pounds.1 Wool pillows are close to the weight of a down pillow. If you reposition at night, travel with your pillow, or share a bed with someone who moves a lot, that weight difference is not trivial.

Moisture regulation. Wool fiber absorbs a meaningful amount of moisture vapor and releases it, which keeps the microclimate around your head drier and more consistent through the night. This isn't the same as buckwheat's airflow, and neither approach is proven to sleep cooler than the other. They work differently. Soft-to-medium comfort without adjustment. Wool pillows are ready on the first night. There's no break-in period and no earthy odor to wait out. The loft is forgiving across sleep positions, and our pillows are overstuffed at build specifically to account for the compression that happens over time.

Lower day-to-day fuss. Washing a buckwheat pillow means unzipping the shell, emptying the hulls into a bag so they don't get wet, washing the shell cold, air-drying it completely, then refilling. Hulls cannot get wet, full stop. Wool care is simpler: keep a pillowcase on it, spot clean when needed, air it in the sun for routine refresh, and hand wash the whole pillow in rare cases. A cleaner sleep surface, especially for allergy-prone sleepers. This is the one corner of the comparison where real research exists, and it favors wool. Peer-reviewed studies found that new buckwheat pillows carried roughly twelve times the endotoxin of synthetic pillows, at 60,950 versus 4,887 EU/g,4 that buckwheat husks act as a reservoir for house dust mites,5 and that buckwheat pillows have triggered documented cases of asthma and allergic rhinitis, including nocturnal asthma in children.67 To be fair, the dust-mite allergen itself builds up on buckwheat over a few months at levels similar to synthetic pillows, so this isn't a case of buckwheat being uniquely a mite magnet.4 But it is an organic material that can harbor allergens and endotoxin in a way wool doesn't. Wool works the other direction: because it stays dry and regulates moisture, it's naturally inhospitable to dust mites and mold, with no chemical treatment. Wool's moisture-buffering comes from the fiber structure, not any treatment or additive. The fiber absorbs vapor before it condenses as liquid heat, which is why it feels different from a pillow that simply allows airflow. Both mechanisms are real; they serve slightly different sleep problems.

Buckwheat is probably right for you if:

A few things both fills have in common: neither should go in the dryer, and both benefit from regular airing. For the differences:

Where each one comes from

Sourcing is worth a word, because it cuts differently than people expect. Most of the world's buckwheat is grown in Russia, China, and Eastern Europe, and the hulls in a pillow are a byproduct of milling the grain for food. Cheap buckwheat fill is usually anonymous imported hull, and you often can't find out where it came from.

The better buckwheat pillow makers, though, source organic US-grown hulls from places like Montana, North Dakota, and the Midwest, and they'll tell you so. A good buckwheat pillow and a good wool pillow are on similar footing there. Traceability comes down to whether you're buying from a maker who tells you where the material came from, and that holds for wool and buckwheat alike. It depends on what kind of heat you're dealing with, and it's worth being straight that no study has put the two head to head. What we can say is how each one works. Buckwheat lets air move between the hulls, so it doesn't trap heat the way a solid foam surface does. Wool works by absorbing moisture vapor before it builds as heat, which keeps the sleep surface drier.

So if your problem is stuffy, trapped heat and you want raw airflow, buckwheat's structure suits that. If you wake up damp or find heat builds gradually through the night, wool's moisture-buffering is aimed at that. Can you wash a wool pillow the same way you wash a buckwheat pillow?

Not quite. Buckwheat washing requires emptying the hulls out first because they cannot get wet, then washing the shell separately. Wool pillow care is different depending on construction.
