Handmade in Sandpoint, Idaho
The Woolshire Pillow
One free fill adjustment if it isn't right, and 30-day returns. How it works
A queen size wool pillow, cut at 20 by 30 inches to fit a queen pillowcase, filled with American virgin wool and sewn into an undyed organic cotton inner case. Most of our wool is scoured at Bollman in San Angelo, Texas, and we card it into batts on 1960s American equipment at our own mill in Sandpoint, Idaho. The carding is what keeps the fill from clumping the way loose wool does.
The cover is sewn shut for durability: one piece, no zipper to take off. Choose the fill above, and if it isn't right we'll adjust it once for free.
Natural virgin wool
Cool, dry and breathable
Temperature-regulating
Cool in summer, warm in winter. Wool vents heat and wicks moisture away from your skin instead of holding it against you.
Why you sleep hotNaturally hypoallergenic
Because it wicks moisture, wool resists mildew and dust mites, one of the most common allergens in bedding. Mold-resistant, too.
Pillow allergiesBreathable
The fill is carded into batts rather than stuffed in loose, so air moves through the pillow and the wool stays even instead of clumping.

Non-toxic
What's in it, and what isn't
What non-toxic means here: two materials, wool and organic cotton, both grown in the US, with no chemical treatments, and sewn by hand. A chemical-free pillow, with no foam, no polyester fill and no flame retardants.
In it
- American virgin wool fill, scoured in Texas
- Undyed organic cotton shell from Texas family farms
- USDA Organic and GOTS certified cotton
- Sewn by hand in Sandpoint, Idaho
Not in it
- No foam
- No polyester fill
- No flame retardants
Details and materials
- Fill
- American virgin wool, scoured in Texas and carded into batts at our mill.
- Shell
- Long-staple organic cotton grown in Lubbock, Texas. Undyed, with no pesticides or additives. USDA Organic and GOTS certified cotton.
- Made
- By hand in our own wool mill in Sandpoint, Idaho, USA, one pillow at a time.
A note on settling: the batting compresses slightly during the first six months of regular use. Sleep on different parts of the pillow, flip it occasionally, and fluff by hand to keep it even. If you prefer high loft, Extra Full uses compressed wool to resist settling.
Sizing and fill
One size: queen. It's cut at 20 by 30 inches, so it fits a queen pillowcase. The loft comes from the fill you choose.
- Thin, about 1½ lb. A low, flat loft. Stomach sleepers, and anyone who likes their head close to the mattress.
- Medium, about 2 lb. A supportive, middle loft. Back and combination sleepers, and most side sleepers. When it's close, start here.
- Full, about 2½ lb. A taller loft that fills the gap between shoulder and ear. Side sleepers with average to broader frames.
- Extra Full, about 3 lb. Our firmest pillow, with compressed wool to resist settling. Broad-shouldered side sleepers, side sleepers on firm mattresses, or anyone who has had a pillow flatten on them.
Care
Wool pillows almost never need a full wash. A clean pillowcase, the occasional spot clean, and a sunny afternoon every few months handle most of it.
- Spot clean with cold water and a wool-safe detergent.
- Give it a sunny afternoon every few months.
- Hand-fluff to keep the loft even.
- If it ever needs a full wash, hand wash it, or machine wash on delicate with a full load of laundry. Never tumble dry.

Find your fill
Question 1 of 4
How do you sleep most of the night?
If you switch around, pick the position you start in or wake up in most.
How firm is your mattress?
A softer mattress lets you sink in, which changes how much loft your pillow needs to add.
What's wrong with your current pillow?
Be honest. This is the most useful answer for picking the right fill.
How would you describe your build?
Shoulder width is what sets the gap to fill on your side, so go by your shoulders, not your height or weight.
If it isn't right, you get one free fill adjustment, with no time limit. We cover shipping both ways.

How wool compares
Wool vs down, memory foam and polyester
What each pillow is filled with, and what that means for loft, washing and heat.
| What we compared | WoolThis pillow | DownFeathers | Memory foamPolyurethane | PolyesterFiberfill |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fill | Virgin wool, washed and carded into batts | Feathers and down clusters | Polyurethane foam | Polyester fiber |
| Where it comes from | Sheep, shorn each spring. A renewable fiber | Ducks and geese | Petroleum | Petroleum |
| Adjust the loft | Yes. Four fills, plus one free adjustment | Only if the cover has a zip | Shredded foam only | Only if the cover has a zip |
| Washing | Spot clean and sun. Machine wash only with a full load. Never tumble dry | Usually machine washable, slow to dry | Usually spot clean only | Usually machine washable |

Questions before you buy
Short answers here. The long ones are in the journal.
Which fill should I choose?
Most people do best on Medium. The fills only go up from there if you're a side sleeper who needs more height, and Thin is for stomach sleepers. When it's close, start on Medium. If it isn't right, we'll adjust the fill once, free.
How to choose a pillowIs the pillow non-toxic?
Yes. The fill is American virgin wool with no chemical treatments, the shell is undyed organic cotton, and there is no foam, no polyester fill and no flame retardants in it. Every pillow is sewn by hand in Sandpoint, Idaho.
Synthetic pillowsAre wool pillows good for you?
We think so, and we make ours the way we'd want to sleep: a natural fiber inside organic cotton, with nothing synthetic in the fill. Wool is naturally hypoallergenic, mold-resistant and temperature-regulating.
Pillow allergiesDo wool pillows go flat?
Wool settles a little in the first months of regular use. Sleep on different parts of the pillow, flip it now and then, and hand-fluff to keep it even. If you'd rather it stayed tall, choose Extra Full, which uses compressed wool, or send it back and we'll add wool for free.
How to choose a pillowCan you wash wool pillows?
Yes, carefully. Spot clean with cold water and a wool-safe detergent, give it a sunny afternoon every month or two, and hand-fluff. If it ever needs a full wash, hand wash it, or machine wash on delicate with a full load of laundry. Never tumble dry.
How to wash your pillowHow often should I replace it?
There's no set date. A wool pillow can be sunned, hand-fluffed and, if it has settled more than you like, refilled by us for free, so replacing it is rarely the first answer.
When to replace a pillowWhat if it isn't right?
If you need more or less wool, we send a return label, adjust the fill and ship it back free. That's one free adjustment, with no time limit and no shipping charge either way. If you are not satisfied within 30 days, return it for a full refund. You pay return shipping, and one pillow per address is covered.

It is a joy to
"It is a joy to support a craft person. The packaging presentation is superb which makes it a great gift idea. It has an old world feel. As a child I'd ride my peddle bike a mile to a trading post. Buy penny gum balls and walk on wooden floors enjoying the gentle squeak of the boards. Woolshire reminds me of a care free summer day. Tree house in an old growth Oak forest. That's a really good pillow."

Thankful!
"Thankful for a pillow that has helped to relieve my shoulder and neck pain. As a side sleeper, it can be difficult to find the right pillow. I opted for the full pillow. I’m 5’3 and 130lbs. It took a couple weeks for my neck to adjust. I love that this pillow is wool. I absolutely LOVE the smell of it. It’s so soothing to me and makes me happy when I lay down on it. It took two weeks to get to me in NW FL. Reason to bump down to four stars: there is a noticeable bump in the middle from being folded in half for shipping. I am very glad I made the splurge on this pillow and highly recommend it."

Wool; the pillow of my dreams
"My Woolshire pillow is exactly everything that I need from a pillow! This wool pillow is nothing at all like my synthetic heat trapping fluff that is never comfy and is toxic to breathe for eight hours every day.
This wool pillow is a dream come true! It's not too high it's not too low, it's not too heavy and it's not too light, It is definitely not hot and stuffy. It is 100% refreshing all night long - every night long!
I wish that I would have had this pillow years ago but knowing that today I have made a healthy and comfortable change to my pillow is where I am grateful today.
This Woolshire pillow is my new beginning towards sleep health and comfort. Yay!" -
High quality, comfy -- glad I got it!
"I've had my Woolshire pillow for 3 months and I'm very happy with it. I previously used a memory-foam pillow for 5 years -- it was very comfortable and had just the right thickness and 'give' for me, but I worried about the weird materials it was made of.
I looked for a natural/organic/healthy pillow, read about Woolshire, and decided to try one. I'm a side-sleeper but I like a thin pillow -- they just work for me. I was torn between a medium or a thin and ordered a medium. It's a bit thicker than I'm used to but it's in the acceptable range and I think it has compressed just a bit over time.
I really like my Woolshire pillow! It has some 'give' and conforms to your head-shape and also seems to breathe and regulate temperature nicely -- it doesn't get too warm.
In short - this pillow is comfy, should last for years, and gives me some peace of mind knowing I'm sleeping on a natural, healthier pillow. Highly recommended!" -
